A Brief History Of Soap
|
The origins of personal hygene date back to prehistoric times. Since water is essential for life, the earliest people lived near water and knew something about its cleansing properties - at least that it rinsed mud off their hands. Soap got its name, according to an ancient Roman legend, from Mount Sapo, where animals were sacrificed. Rain washed a mixture of melted animal fat, or tallow, and wood ashes down into the clay soil along the Tiber River. Women found that this clay mixture made their wash cleaner with much less effort. |

What is soap? Soap is the result of a basic chemical reaction between fats or oils and lye. The difference between manufactured harsh, greasy, “lye soap,” and luxurious hand made soap, are the choice's of ingredients. At durhamsoap.co.uk we carefully hand pick a combination of quality fragrance, essential oils, natural ingredients and colorant (our closely guarded secret). That's why our hand made soap suddenly takes on that charming “character” that commercially manufactured soap can’t even begin to compete with.
